Soil erosion is a major problem for agriculture. Many years of intensive cultivation can deplete the soil of nutrients. Researchers worked together with farmers to improve crop yield. They employ bacteria to enrich the soil. The bacteria can form a symbiosis with protein-rich plants such as soybean, pea, faba bean, peanut, clover and lupine.

Farmers in Ethiopia have experimented with nitrogen-fixing leguminous plants in order to increase their crop yields. The grain yield results were comparable or even better than the plants receiving synthetic nitrogen fertilizer.
