Is multiliteracy taking over the traditional basic reading skills? @KriKumpulainen: there is a trend that young people don’t read as much as they used to. However, multiliteracy is not opposed to traditional reading. #tiedekulma #smartashel #SmartasHEL
Enjoy the traditional maritime atmosphere at Helsinki’s annual Herring Market, which takes place at the Market Square - near the City Center Campus! Did you know that The Herring Market is the oldest traditional event in Helsinki, having been held since at least 1743.
When students got fed up with the traditional exercises, they were given the chance to redesign their basic education themselves. Out of the students’ ideas was born the DIGest method, an online-oriented way of learning and teaching mathematics and statistics. It clearly improved the learning outcomes. Mika Koskenoja is a university lecturer in mathematics and member of the network of top-level teachers. He coordinated the trial courses and thinks that one of the best things about the University of Helsinki is our enormously enthusiastic students.
Science benefits when research groups are international and multidisciplinary. This brings new perspectives from other fields and beyond the traditional Eurocentrism, allowing a dismantling of colonialist structures. #HelsinkiUni #research #immigration https://t.co/KDLDS8ubaB
However traditional, presentations teach important career skills. "It’s not enough that students are able to write about their field. They must also be able to convey their knowledge to others," says @TiinaAiraksine1. #studying #teaching #HelsinkiEducation https://t.co/wFnqwpWyx9
In recent years, Europe has seen the rise of several movements that use the traditional nuclear family ideal to oppose equal rights for sexual minorities. Much of the funding seems to come from Russia. #equality #lgbt #pride #HelsinkiPride #HelsinkiUni https://t.co/Y2c5ecgA77
In recent years, several movements have arisen in Europe fighting equal rights for sexual minorities by advocating the ideal of the traditional nuclear family. “Issues surrounding sexuality and gender identity have become central topics in the popular movements of democratic states”, says researcher Katja Kahlina.
Conferment continues: on the third evening, the now conferred doctors and masters attend a grand ball with traditional academic dances, wearing their new insignia. Here’s a quick snapshot of the not-at-all-silly-looking doctoral polonaise. #WeAreHelsinkiUni #filpromootio19

In traditional agrarian Finland, Easter was a terrifying time. Starting on Shrove Tuesday, the focus turned to Christ’s suffering and forces of evil walked the earth, waiting for the three days during which Christ would be gone from the world.
In recent years, several movements have arisen in Europe fighting equal rights for sexual minorities by advocating the ideal of the traditional nuclear family. Katja Kahlina described the common denominators of the movements in different countries at Think Corner on Researchers’ Night, 29 September.

Have a nice Lucia Day! The university choirs Akademiska Damkören Lyran and Sångföreningen Akademen brought light and some Christmas spirit to the university today. Finland’s national St. Lucia is traditionally crowned in the Helsinki Cathedral on December 13th.
In Finland, furs were commonly used in burials until the 14th and 15th century, and in northern Finland as late as the 17th century. In cremation, bear skins were particularly popular, while Finnish forest reindeer and elk skin were commonly used in burials. “Wrapping bodies in fur is a tradition born already among hunting cultures. The continuation of this tradition all the way to early recorded history and, in Lapland, up to the 17th century, speaks of the preservation of a spiritual culture connected with hunting”, says doctoral candidate Tuija Kirkinen.
Any proper academic ceremony begins and ends with a good old procession, yes? 🤓🎩 We do love our traditions! #WeAreHelsinkiUni #academictwitter #ceremony
Fur remains found in burial sites demonstrate the importance of hunting traditions in Iron Age Finland. According to a recent dissertation, they speak of a relationship between humans and animals. #HelsinkiUni #archeology #nature #history @HYhumtdk https://t.co/XRCiHB0Nln
The Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters combines fields of study such as area and cultural studies, theology and study of religions, communication studies, and indigenous studies. Most courses are not discipline based, but rather follow a few key themes. Students have told me that this is one of the best qualities of the programme – a truly interdisciplinary approach to intercultural issues.” Saila Poutiainen is the Programme Director for the International Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters at the University of Helsinki. In this programme, you focus on questions of religion and conflicts, human interaction, living traditions, and transnationalism through four thematic modules. Graduates get to apply their theoretical grasp to everyday situations. In their multicultural and internationally oriented working life they deal with issues such as intercultural interaction, diversity, internationalisation, cultural management, the media and power. You can apply to our International Master’s Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.
"University of Helsinki has a very strong tradition in linking together ecology and evolution. The Master's Programme here lets you discover this at every biological level, from genetics to populations, or from molecular mechanisms to behavioural plasticity." Rose Thorogood is Assistant Professor in the International Master's Programme in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Helsinki. The programme offers a wide variety of topics in three areas: ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation biology. It gives you a perspective on biology from the level of genes to communities of species and addresses global environmental challenges. You can apply to our International Master's Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.
