Technology is what we make of it, says Kaiju Kangas, assistant professor of technology education. In encouraging young people to discover they can be the makers and designers themselves, Finnish schools do things differently.

“The industry is mass-producing food and especially ready-to-eat foodstuffs, so it is important to develop alternative and less harmful ways for preservation. My dream is to see self-preservative foods, where no chemicals are added.” Mohammad Azizkhani is a student in the International Master’s Programme in Food Sciences at the University of Helsinki. In this programme, you gain the knowledge and skills to have an impact on what people will eat in the future. You explore innovations in food and learn to improve the healthiness, safety, ecology and ethics of food and food processing. You also get to know how raw materials and processing technologies are utilised to make food taste good. You can apply to our International Master’s Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.
Machine learning technologies are democratizing and becoming easier and easier to utilize, says @rsiilasmaa #elementsofAI
Job description for urban trees could be something like this: - provide shelter and diverse habitats for many species - absorb carbon, which curbs greenhouse gas emissions - decrease temperatures by offering shade and evaporating water - decrease the risk of urban flooding - provide city residents with aesthetic pleasure and comfort. Researchers aim to create models on how various species of trees grow and function in varying surroundings. New technologies, such as laser scanning based on remote sensing, are needed to find out such details. This way they can imagine what certain areas and their tree stand will look like in, say, 40 years.
Many people use step counters, monitor their sleep with smart wristbands, or cheer on their friends in exercise apps. New technologies are not ethically unproblematic. “When a great deal of health data is produced on us, it is also recorded somewhere. And it is being controlled by major corporations, not the public health system. What if we later decide we no longer want to share our information?” asks University Researcher Venla Oikkonen. Researchers in Helsinki tackle self-quantification from the perspectives of gender, class, and ethnicity.
