Meet the teacher! In 2000, Kimmo Tuominen was in Japan for a conference trip while finishing his PhD in Theoretical Physics. These trips gave the opportunity to collaborate with others in the science community, and the friendships formed with like-minded colleagues have lasted to this day. Today, Kimmo is a physicist who teaches in the Master’s Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods. "Instead of lectures, I teach by using case-based learning. We meet each week and solve problems together, as collaboration is an important skill needed in working life, too." The applications are currently open to our 35 International Master’s Programmes. Apply before 15 Jan 2021.

Gas-based humour is an age-old source of amusement. According to researchers, farts are a part of concealed physicality that pushes through to the surface.
Teaching has to stem from students’ needs both online and in the lecture room. Despite not sharing a physical location with students, the presence of university lecturer Olli-Pekka Penttinen is felt on his web courses. Students can ask further questions, get feedback, and clarify things which they are not sure about. “The idea is that courses are simply teaching, not online teaching or lecture-based teaching”, he says.
