In Finland, furs were commonly used in burials until the 14th and 15th century, and in northern Finland as late as the 17th century. In cremation, bear skins were particularly popular, while Finnish forest reindeer and elk skin were commonly used in burials. “Wrapping bodies in fur is a tradition born already among hunting cultures. The continuation of this tradition all the way to early recorded history and, in Lapland, up to the 17th century, speaks of the preservation of a spiritual culture connected with hunting”, says doctoral candidate Tuija Kirkinen.
Researchers were able to track down the strongest known solar storm through trees growing in Lapland. It occurred in the spring of 774. “Trees are a memory stock of the past," quips Markku Oinonen, director of the Laboratory of Chronology at the Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki.
Germans left behind a great deal of material to Lapland after the Second World War. Its remnants have often been termed ‘war junk’. To locals, however, they are an important part of the local cultural landscape, as well as manifestations of individual and collective memories.
Increasing the amount of carbon stored in the biosphere, i.e., soil and plants, might be a service Finland could provide through its forests and other land use to help the world halt climate change. Researchers were surprised at how low the costs would be, particularly in Lapland.
