The Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters combines fields of study such as area and cultural studies, theology and study of religions, communication studies, and indigenous studies. Most courses are not discipline based, but rather follow a few key themes. Students have told me that this is one of the best qualities of the programme – a truly interdisciplinary approach to intercultural issues.” Saila Poutiainen is the Programme Director for the International Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters at the University of Helsinki. In this programme, you focus on questions of religion and conflicts, human interaction, living traditions, and transnationalism through four thematic modules. Graduates get to apply their theoretical grasp to everyday situations. In their multicultural and internationally oriented working life they deal with issues such as intercultural interaction, diversity, internationalisation, cultural management, the media and power. You can apply to our International Master’s Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.

"You need to have a broad understanding how society works really to understand it, so you need breadth in your Master's studies, which our courses give you. However, you also need in-depth knowledge of particular areas of contemporary societies and the programme gives you that too." David Inglis is Professor in the International Master's Programme in Contemporary Societies at the University of Helsinki. The multidisciplinary, research-based programme focuses on the key themes in the dynamics of contemporary societies, both in a European and a global context. You can specialise in Sociology, Social and Public Policy, Social Psychology, Social and Cultural Anthropology or Development Studies. You can apply to our International Master’s Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.
“The programme gives students the tools to see how Europe has become Europe, and how there can be different, even conflicting perspectives. The contemporary and historical role of Europe in the world is viewed from the standpoint of political, cultural and historical research – all in the same programme." Lotta Lounasmeri is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for European Studies and a lecturer in the International Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki. The programme gives a multidisciplinary insight to the Nordic countries from a European perspective and to Europe from a Nordic perspective. You will learn to understand what lies behind the tensions, challenges and possibilities that are manifesting themselves today. You can apply to our International Master’s Programmes as of 3 December 2018 until 11 January 2019.

Germans left behind a great deal of material to Lapland after the Second World War. Its remnants have often been termed ‘war junk’. To locals, however, they are an important part of the local cultural landscape, as well as manifestations of individual and collective memories.
