Professor Jaana Bäck was awarded the University of Helsinki Open Science Award 2018 on Wednesday. Bäck is professor of forest-atmosphere interactions at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki. She is investigating the role of Nordic forests in curbing climate change. With her research group, Bäck is trying to find out how our forests cool the climate by producing volatile vapours that are involved in cloud formation. In 2017, Bäck served as the principal investigator and director of a multidisciplinary project of many years coordinated by EASAC, the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council. The project concluded with the publication of a popular and openly available report, Multi-functionality and Sustainability in the European Union's Forests.

Marttinen on yksi tiistaina 5.12. “It is a ridiculous amount of effort for ordinary people to try and figure out the environmental and climate impact of the things they’re buying, like food. We need legislation and proper political decision-making to fundamentally change the way we do things across society as a whole,” says professor Atte Moilanen. Moilanen was recently granted a Distinguished Service Award by the Society for Conservation Biology Europe Section and he now names an effective intervention for protecting the environment.

Professor Samuli Siltanen returns to the fundamentals: Research uses up a great deal of public funding, and tax payers have a right to hear about its results in a way that they can understand. Today, professor Siltanen was bestowed the J. V. Snellman Award for outstanding efforts in disseminating scholarly knowledge.

Reetta Kivelä, Doctor of Food Sciences, has developed a protein derived from Northern beans and oats, intended to challenge minced meat, the mainstay of Finnish everyday cooking. “We intend for this completely new product, pulled oat, to take its place alongside fish, meat, eggs, soy and wheat as a meal ingredient,” explains Kivelä, who wrote her doctoral dissertation on the properties of beta-glucan in oats at the University of Helsinki in 2011. The new product is based on the experiences Kivelä acquired during her dissertation process. Reetta Kivelä was also voted the young researcher-entrepreneur of 2015, an award granted to a researcher who has generated a business based on research.

For an awarded teacher Maijaliisa Erkkola, it is important that students process their thoughts together, since work these days is carried out in teams. Working in a group highlights aspects of the topics being examined that students might not think of by themselves. Erkkola also wants to initiate students into the academic community already during their freshman term. It teaches the students to bare responsibility and share their expertise.
It is teachers' responsibility to surprise the students by how much they can learn, believes an awarded teacher Martin Björklund. He has been teaching public law for over a decade and has also developed his teaching constantly. “One of the insights I have gained is that I’m not getting paid for uttering as many words and displaying as many PowerPoint slides as possible in 90 minutes.”
