Our Taita Research Station turns 10 years on 28.1.! 🎉🎊 Did you know that our southernmost research unit operates in Kenya? Join us online and hear what's in the future for the station! #HelsinkiSustainability #TaitaResearchStation @PetriPellikka https://t.co/f3SaOPgLlp
Meet the tree hyrax, an animal which may belong to a species previously unknown to science. Tree hyraxes look like a large guinea pigs but are distant relatives of elephants, and they are able to scream with the strength of more than one hundred decibels.
Say hello to the tree hyrax! Researchers at our Taita Research Station in Kenya recently found this little creature, a distant relative of elephants (!), who may belong to a previously unknown species. #HelsinkiSustainability #biodiversity @PetriPellikka https://t.co/UffVc0zl1s
Thank you Nessling foundation. Thanks to our great team. Our work in Kenya continues. What a start for the coming years! #helsinkiuni #nesslingfoundation https://t.co/MEwqDaM1oa

The dwarf galago and tree hyrax both appear to be species new to science, but also on the brink of extinction due to deforestation. How did researcheres find them in the Taita hills of Kenya? Hanna Rosti tells about how the research started and the plans to save the species. If you are interested in field biology, follow @Kentällä - In the field for more!
Good news from the Kenyan Taita Hills: the Taita mountain dwarf galago still survives. The tiny nocturnal prosimian was first reported in 2002 but no more signs of it were found for almost 20 years – until now.
At the top of #Taita hills at Vuria, #Kenya, 2208m. Behind @geography_uh @helsinkiuni students is a sheer drop of 200 m and #Tanzania 60km away. Luckily the #clouds cleared up! Thanks guys, it took us 3hours to hike up. @INAR_fin @HELSINKISUS #WeAreHelsinkiUni

The University of Helsinki compensates for the emissions generated by its employees’ air travel in 2018. Compensation for the climate effects of work-related travel will continue in the coming years: the aim is to establish a model that makes air travel emissions and compensation an integral part of the process of considering travel needs and selecting modes of transport.
